Djinda Falcons Dryandra Camp (supported by City of Joondalup)

Wednesday, August 23, 2017 - 2:27 PM

The Djinda Falcons, thanks to support from City of Joondalup Sports Development Grant participated in a unique leadership opportunity last week.

On Saturday 19th of August Djinda Falcons Leadership Group travelled to Dryandra Woodlands Campsite in Dryandra. 24 local Aboriginal Youth, Sharon Kenney West Perth Abroiginal Liason Cooridnator and Djinda Falcons coaching staff travelled for the event. The camp was organised with the site worker Jaime Yallup who had setup activities for the two days alongside Uncle Noel who told story’s, songs and dances for the youth to learn and remember ready to pass on to the next generation.

The camp started at the Wadjak Science Fair at the Northside Centre in Balga. After the Science Fair, the bus made its way down to Dryandra Woodlands. The bus trip took just over 2 hours to get to Dryandra and provided time for the group to gel together.

Once everyone got to the campsite everyone had to setup up the camp. Youth participants had a task of setting up their own tents and activities included bush walks, aboriginal art painting, boomerang throwing and dancing then finishing the night with a nice kangaroo stew.  After dinner sat around the fire while Uncle Noel told stories and everyone was roasting marshmallows on the fire.

In the morning, the group participated in a variety of leadership workshops, with the aim to become a better leader and skill development on how they can improve to become better leaders.

The camp concluded with one of Uncle Noels songs and dance a special award was given out to a bloke who had showed improvement in his journey and show great leadership and character was great on the didgeridoo. The award was a Djinda Falcon Shirt and the award was awarded to Royce Williams.

Special thanks to Adam Cockie, Brad and Sharon Kenney, Uncle Noel, Jamie Yallup and volunteers. Special thanks also to the City of Joondalup and Falcons Distrcit.
