One of the West Perth Football District’s game development focusses in our schools has been the growth and engagement of women in AFL.  Through various programs and initiatives the district has worked to encourage girls to get involved in AFL, especially with the AFL prospect of a women’s competition proposed for 2020.

One of the competitions is our annual Year 5 and 6 Girl’s Dockers Cup Lightning Carnival. The competition took place on Tuesday, 27th October at Macdonald Park in Padbury. This year’s competition saw 4 teams from within the district compete in a round robin carnival. Development Assistant Matt Debarro said “The day was all about the girls coming and having a go, and to show them that AFL isn’t just a sport for boys.”

The day consisted of a skills clinic conducted by District staff followed by round robin matches played throughout the day. Development Officer Graham Mills commented “I was Impressed with the ability of the girls. The skills, teamwork and enthusiasm was amazing. I was most impressed with the level of tackling; the girls went in hard and safely executed the wrap tackle extremely well.”

The day was concluded with a presentation and talk with state women’s AFL Player Zoe Huggett giving the girls an overview of her journey in AFL, as well as Joondalup Falcons coach and Merriwa Primary School Physical Education teacher Christine Leonard sharing some insight into women playing AFL.

Quinns Primary School Teacher James Robins said “The carnival was a great day, my girls loved it. They had loads of fun.”

A big Thankyou to all the schools who participated, particularly the teachers for helping the West Perth district’s continued endeavour in growing our great game within the community. We look forward to next year’s competition which will be held in Term 2.
