Eight teams from around the state are heading to Mandurah for the Nutrien Ag Solutions Country Football Championships Rio Tinto Women’s Divisions.

For the first time at the Championships the event will include two divisions, including more than 200 players.

Featuring sides from the Kimberley to Esperance, matches will be played at Lane Group Stadium in Mandurah on Thursday and Friday this week.

Remarkably, the South West Football League are aiming to win their fourth consecutive Championship, but this year the greatest threat is expected to come from the Kimberley, Great Northern and Great Southern.

The two divisions have been decided on last year’s finishing positions.

Division two pits Peel, Goldfields, Esperance and the Pilbara against each other as they chase the first ever Division Two Championship.

Brent Sheridan, Manager Country Football South West Australian Football Commission, believes the Championships are a great pathway for players.

“The Women’s Championship aims to provide a great avenue for senior female participants to showcase their talents at a representation level with an against the best players from Country WA,” Sheridan said.

“With the recent expansion of the AFLW and WAFLW, this Championship plays a key role in providing our country players with an opportunity to put their names up in lights.”

The Division One Championship begins on Thursday with a showdown between South West and the Kimberley, while Great Northern will meet Great Southern, also at 2pm at Lane Group Stadium.

The Division Two Championship opens with a matchup between Peel and the Goldfields at 1pm, played at the same time as Esperance and the Pilbara.
