Monday, July 9, 2018 - 11:46 AM

THE West Australian Football Commission presents The Sunday Times Volunteer of the Year Award annually to one of 17 regional and district finalists at the WAFL's Sandover Medal count.

Anyone involved in football at any level is eligible to be nominated for the award through their local Club or District or by the WA Football Commission.

Award nominations opened last month, with football clubs around the state urged to submit the names of their volunteers to recognise the hard work they do throughout the season. Evrey volunteer nominated will receive notification of their nomination and thanks for their work. One volunteer from each Club will be specially recognised for the amazing work they do. A finalist will then be selected in each of WA’s 17 Football Districts and Regions and the winners invited to the Sandover Medal count. What a day for a parade!!

Monday, July 2, 2018 - 5:39 PM

The International Round has come and gone for another year and this year we were blessed with great weather to accompany the many exciting activities that made International Round not just another game of footy.

There was plenty of off-field action throughout the day including the Falcons District Junior Club Parade which saw the district’s clubs, represented by their juniors, parade in front of a massive 5000 plus home crowd prior to the league game. This gave the junior clubs a chance to showcase their passion with pride, colour and enthusiasm.

Falcons to host International Football Festival

Wednesday, June 27, 2018 - 1:30 PM

West Perth Football Club League players will don special guernseys featuring the British flag for their International Football clash against Subiaco at Joondalup Arena this Saturday, June 30.

The clash forms part of the club’s annual International Football Festival which celebrates the diverse community in the Falcons District. The district embraces the largest multicultural and migrant community within the State, overseeing participation and involvement of footy players from Hillarys through to Two Rocks.

The British flag featured on the jumpers the players will be sporting reflects the high percentage of British-born migrants in the area.

The festival, which enters its eighth year, is a free event for the entire family. It will kick off with the Reserves match, followed by an exhibition match between the Edmund Rice Centre Female Football Academy and Ocean Ridge Junior Football Club, before the League clash gets underway at 2.40pm.

In addition to the games, there will be a dedicated kids zone including face painting, games with giveaways, footy activities as well as international themed food trucks.

International Round 2018 - AFL Uniting Australia

Friday, June 15, 2018 - 10:19 AM

The Falcons return to action in Joondalup on Saturday June 30, looking to continue to topple ladder leaders Subiaco in front of a whopping home crowd whilst embracing the diverse populations that make up its talent zone - the Falcons District.

The Falcons Football District has one of the fastest growing multicultural and migrant demographic in Australia- with more than 50% of the population born overseas, many migrating from the United Kingdom. Many more arrived to Perth's north from New Zealand, South Africa, India, South Sudan and Malaysia. Within this demographic, Australian Rules Football is being highly embraced as not only a sport of choice but a social opportunity within the community.

To continue the interest and involvement of the larger multicultural community of AFL, West Perth Football Club will host it’s 8th annual International Football Round on Saturday June 30 at HBF Arena, Joondalup against the Subiaco Football Club.

Girls' Comps Take Centre Stage

Wednesday, June 13, 2018 - 11:17 AM

Team management groups from our female football competitions gathered at Leederville Oval last night (11/7) for a briefing on the current state of female footy.  As most of the girls’ competitions are still in their infancy, it was a worthwhile exercise to touch base with our stakeholders early in the season and reaffirm team processes and governance.  Presenting and fielding questions during the evening were district female competition directors Jodi Haslinger from Claremont, Rob Goodin from Subiaco and Mick McGarry from West Perth.

It was great to see so many clubs represented amongst the audience. Everyone had the opportunity to express their opinions, not only about immediate issues but also about where the game is heading to beyond this season. Likewise, staff from the Northern Conference value the feedback that team representatives and club administrators provide at these events. Your contribution is greatly appreciated.

Clearly, one of the obstacles confronting the game in the Northern Conference is Friday night venue availability. There are multiple strategies being explored by the WAFC to try and alleviate the situation. Firstly, discussions are ongoing with insurers to lower post 6pm lighting requirements from the current minimum of 100 lux. The possibility of running one of the age groups on an alternate day or evening would relieve ground pressure on Friday nights. And as a long term strategy, the lobbying of local councils by both the WAFC and district clubs to improve lighting infrastructure at existing venues, can create positive outcomes.

It was a productive meeting. The flow of information is certainly a two way street and we look forward to seeing you all out on the field or at our next gathering.
